Use the Turn Peg-Only Mode On/Off command to switch peg-only mode on and off. In peg only mode, you will only be able to modify pegs, not the elements they are attached to. In this mode, you can select and modify elements to add keyframes to the pegs they are attached to, rather than the elements themselves.
